E-Licensing

Syngenta's new e-licensing system provides breeders around the world with quick and easy access to our patented vegetable native traits for breeding. Under our e-license system, the licensing terms are standard, no negotiation is necessary and the trait royalties ensure a fair sharing of benefits (i.e. added value) between patent owner, grower and licensee.

At the moment, four patented native traits present in Syngenta commercial vegetable varieties are available for licensing by interested parties under standard terms:

Native Traits

At Syngenta, multi-disciplinary teams are collaborating using the most advanced technologies to analyze crop performance and detect genome regions underlying valuable traits. These traits can provide, for example, resistance against diseases and pests. They can enhance yield, provide different color or size of fruits or improve flavors.

Identifying those genetic factors among the vast diversity in each crop's traits of interest requires long and complex discovery programs. Thorough validation of the agronomic value of the identified trait components or combination of trait components in commercial varieties are conducted by Syngenta scientists in a range of agronomic and climatic contexts before being used  in  breeding programs to create new and attractive plant characteristics. Carefully selected plants are used as parents to obtain offspring representing the optimal combination of the desired traits.

The development of new plant varieties with the desired combination of traits takes breeding expertise and a huge effort over many years of R&D. By out-licensing its Native Traits (NT) patents, Syngenta aims at disseminating this technology to support breeders and growers in achieving their goal of developing better varieties.
